How can advanced genomic technologies help shorten the long and often challenging journey towards a diagnosis for patients with rare diseases?

The second webinar in the autumn CREATIC LabtoP Talks series will welcome Ondřej Slabý, Professor, Head of the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University, and Director of the Research Division at the Centre of Excellence CREATIC.

Rare and ultra-rare diseases continue to present a major diagnostic challenge. Despite undergoing years of medical examinations, many patients and their families remain without a definitive diagnosis. This prolonged and demanding process is often referred to as the diagnostic odyssey.

The webinar will examine the unmet needs of patients living with undiagnosed conditions and explore how advances in genomics are changing the diagnostic landscape. Comprehensive genome analysis and emerging sequencing technologies are creating new opportunities to identify the genetic causes of rare diseases and provide answers in cases where conventional diagnostic approaches have not been successful.

The presentation will also highlight the potential of advanced genomic methods to support more precise diagnoses, guide further clinical care and contribute to the development of personalised therapeutic strategies.

About the speaker

Ondřej Slabý is a Czech molecular biologist and geneticist, Professor and Head of the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University. He also leads the Centre for Precision Medicine at University Hospital Brno and serves as Director of the Research Division at the Centre of Excellence CREATIC.

He is board-certified in clinical genetics and is among the pioneers of precision oncology and precision medicine in the Czech Republic. His research focuses on the application of genomic technologies in oncology, rare diseases and personalised medicine.

His team was the first in the Czech Republic to introduce comprehensive genomic profiling of tumours for individual therapeutic planning in oncology. Since 2023, he has served as Chairman of the Czech Health Research Council.
